BRSD Board Highlights - November 2022
Posted on:Career Counsellors help students prepare for their future
The Battle River School Division Board of Trustees heard from three high school students at their meeting on November 24, to explain how the work of Career Counsellors is helping them find their way to the future.
Jesse Steil, of Bawlf School, along with Yami Asseffa and Sophia D’Eschambeault, both from Ecole Camrose Composite High School, shared their own experiences of trying to navigate the world of post-secondary opportunities, course requirements and scholarships, and expressed their gratitude for the Career Counsellors who point them in the direction of resources, help them interpret information and confirm they are taking the courses they need in order to qualify for the post-secondary programs they want. BRSD has two Career Counsellors available, who support students in every BRSD high school.
A successful audit season
With a financial year-end of August 31, fall is always audit season for BRSD. The audit firm of MNP reported a “clean” audit to the Board of Trustees on November 24, with no issues, concerns or adjustments.
Preparing Next Year’s Calendar
Based on the input provided by more than 2500 parents, students and staff, BRSD’s Deputy Superintendent, Shan Jorgenson-Adam, presented four options for the 2023-2024 school calendar to the Board at their November 24 meeting. Board members expressed their preference and a completed calendar will be posted by mid-December.
Attendance Boundary Review
Attendance Boundaries for schools were set when Battle River School Division was established in 1995 and most have never changed.
For that reason, the Board has decided to conduct a complete and thorough Attendance Boundary review over the course of the next year. The purpose will be to ensure:
- Schools, particularly in rural communities, are properly supported to provide quality educational opportunities
- Boundaries aren’t influenced by artificial factors, such as municipal lines
- Updated boundaries reflect changing demographics
- Attendance boundaries are logical and efficient for each school
At their meeting on November 24, Trustees reviewed proposals from four potential consultants to support this work.
Making a Travel Plan
Board members received a tentative itinerary and travel plans for Central High Sedgewick Public School’s proposed trip to Italy and Greece during Spring Break 2024. The trip was approved in principle.
