Posted on:BRSD Student Career Pathways: Green Certificate, RAP, and Dual Credit Courses
Battle River School Division (BRSD) is proud to offer students a wide range of opportunities to enhance their education and prepare for their futures through unique programs like the Green Certificate, Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP), and Dual Credit courses.
These programs provide students with hands-on, real-world learning experiences that go beyond the classroom and help them build valuable skills in various industries:
- Work Experience Program: Work Experience provides students with experiential learning activities as an integral part of their school program. Currently, BRSD has 172 students enrolled in this program.
- Green Certificate Program: This agricultural training program allows students to gain experience in areas such as farming, animal care and crop production, all while earning high school credits. By partnering with industry professionals, students develop practical knowledge and competencies that can lead to careers in agriculture. In Battle River, 14 students are currently enrolled in the Green Certificate Program.
- Registered Apprenticeship Program: RAP gives students the chance to begin a trade apprenticeship while still in high school. Students earn both high school credits and hours toward their apprenticeship, offering them a head start in the trades. From carpentry and plumbing to mechanics and welding, RAP connects students with local businesses and skilled tradespeople to jumpstart their careers. Currently, there are 33 students enrolled in RAP. All BRSD high schools, with the exception of BRACE, have students enrolled in RAP.
- Dual Credit Courses: These courses allow students to earn both high school and post-secondary credits simultaneously. BRSD has partnered with several post-secondary institutions to offer courses in areas like health care, technology, business, and more. This gives students the opportunity to explore potential career paths and get a head start on their post-secondary education, often at no cost. Last year, four students completed a post-secondary certificate at Olds College before graduating from high school! This year, BRSD has 18 students enrolled in Dual Credit, taking such courses as Accounting, Sports Management, Marketing, Psychology, and Veterinarian Technical Assistant.
“We are excited to provide our students with these incredible programs that open doors to future career opportunities,” says Rhae-Ann Holoien, superintendent of schools. “By participating in these programs, students can explore their interests, gain real-world experience, and earn valuable credentials, all while completing their high school education.”
BRSD is committed to supporting every student in finding their pathway to success, whether that be through skilled trades, agriculture, or post-secondary education. These programs are designed to help students discover their passions and set them up for future success.
