Media Release: BRSD Engages in Indigenous Learning with Kevin John of They Build Bridges

Posted on:

Battle River School Division (BRSD) is committed to fostering reconciliation and deepening understanding of Indigenous history, cultures, and perspectives throughout the division.

As part of this commitment, BRSD leadership has engaged in two powerful learning sessions led by Kevin John, founder of They Build Bridges, to support BRSD leadership’s use of the CASS “Guide to Relationships and Learning with the Indigenous Peoples of Alberta."

Kevin John, a respected Indigenous speaker, facilitator, and advocate for Truth and Reconciliation, guided BRSD’s leadership team through meaningful discussions and reflections. These sessions provided an opportunity for BRSD leaders to learn, ask questions, and gain a deeper understanding of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit perspectives.

Through engaging activities and open dialogue, the team explored key aspects of Indigenous identity, teachings, language, acknowledgment, treaties, policies and reconciliation.

Shane Gau, principal of École Camrose Composite High School in BRSD, expressed the importance of this learning for making change through leadership.

"Our sessions with Kevin John have been invaluable in helping us reflect on our roles as educators and leaders in reconciliation," said Gau. "This work is about more than just learning; it’s about taking action to create meaningful change in our schools and communities. It is about walking together to create meaningful relationships with our Indigenous Leaders.”

The sessions align with BRSD’s ongoing commitment to the 2024-27 Education Plan, particularly in enhancing high-quality learning environments and fostering well-being for all students and staff. By incorporating the guidance from the CASS resource and engaging in Indigenous-led learning opportunities, BRSD is taking intentional steps toward reconciliation and inclusivity.

BRSD extends its gratitude to Kevin John and They Build Bridges for sharing rich knowledge and perspectives, helping BRSD continue along this important journey.

BRSD is dedicated to its vision: Every Student, Every Day, a Success. With a focus on equity, inclusion, and high-quality learning environments, BRSD continues to support professional learning opportunities that help educators and leaders create meaningful connections with all students and communities.
